Rural Manitoba LongHaul & Distribution Build

2021–2025 | Rural Manitoba Long Haul & Distribution Build

No Limits Underground delivered one of the largest rural broadband civil builds in Manitoba, completing more than 1,200 km of longhaul and distribution mainline construction across numerous municipalities between 2021 and 2025. This multiyear initiative brought highspeed connectivity to thousands of rural homes and businesses through a full civil and fiber installation scope.

Project Overview

Our team executed the complete civil build—directional drilling, trenching, plowing, backhaul routes, distribution networks, service drops, fiber placement, and splicing. With the exception of engineering and design, NLU delivered every component of the construction program.

The project required rapid scaling of workforce and equipment. We expanded our fleet, added specialized machinery, and grew our team to meet aggressive timelines and evolving project demands. Throughout the build, we collaborated closely with planning teams and permit holders to resolve alignment issues, optimize routes, and develop solutions for complex crossings.

Key Challenges

The project spanned diverse and often difficult terrain, including:

  • Canadian Shield conditions, limestone, and bedrock
  • Wetlands, low‑lying areas, and environmentally sensitive zones
  • Dense forest and bush corridors
  • Tight deadlines across multiple municipalities
  • Winter construction and extreme weather
  • Numerous major crossings requiring specialized planning

Despite these challenges, NLU consistently met schedule expectations and maintained high construction standards across all phases.

Major Crossings Completed

The long‑haul routes required extensive coordination and execution of significant crossings, including:

  • Major waterways and river systems
  • Railway corridors
  • Provincial and national highways
  • Aqueduct infrastructure
  • TransCanada pipeline corridors

Each crossing was completed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with regulatory requirements.
